Circle clip

Circle clip

1931

Platinum, diamonds
Van Cleef & Arpels Collection

Created in the 1930s, the Circle clip – in this instance set entirely with diamonds – illustrates the influence of Art Deco stylings on contemporary creation at Van Cleef & Arpels. Reflecting a modernist trend, it pays tribute to industrial resurgence, its round silhouette suggesting speed and perpetual motion. This type of jewelry, designed to be worn in various configurations depending on the wearer’s mood and environment, was very much in fashion at the time. A Van Cleef & Arpels catalogue from the 1930s describes the clip, with a subtle dash of humor, as: “a circle with a magic clasp, perfect to adorn a hat, blouse or bag.”
